Art Project: Hello! Welcome to our “Habitat from Home” project series, where we offer fun and family-friendly ways to connect children to the mission of Fort Collins Habitat for Humanity. Today’s project invites you to think creatively about what “home” means to you. Channel those feelings or thoughts into a drawing, painting, essay, song…whatever feels right to you!

Age Recommendation: Appropriate for all ages! Difficulty can be adapted if necessary.

Love this project? We’d love to see your photos and finished products! Please connect with us on Facebook, or email them to Alex for a chance to be featured on our social media or website.

Project Directions: Here at Habitat, our whole world revolves around the idea of “HOME.” As an affordable homeownership provider, we partner with local families to help them build and buy their own houses, creating stability for themselves and their families. Everyone has a different experience of “home,” and we want to hear yours–channel those thoughts and ideas into art to help show the importance of having a safe place to live.

  1. Guiding Question: “What does home mean to you?”
    • Some helpful things to get you started: WHO do you share your home with “WHAT about your home makes it special” WHERE do you feel comfortable and safe?
  2. Use the answer to that question to create something to represent HOME to you. Maybe it’s a drawing or painting! Maybe it’s an essay or poem, or even a sculpture. There’s no “right” way to do it–just think creatively about how you can represent your sense of home, and share it with the world.
  3. When you’re done, please share your creation with Fort Collins Habitat by commenting on our facebook page with photos. Or, if you choose to write an essay, poem or song, you can email it to Alex.
  4. Reflections:
    • How do you think “HOME” art would look if it was created by someone that did not have access to a safe, stable place to live?
    • How has your experience of “HOME” shaped who you are?
    • Do you think it’s important for everyone to have a safe place to live? Why?
