In Summer of 2024, we wrapped up our first 19 client projects through CAPABLE. This partnership allows us to support “aging in place” without adding brand new construction to our schedule.
CAPABLE (Community Aging in Place- Advancing Better Living for Elders) was developed by the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing with a goal to support older adults remaining in their home. Over three to four months, participants in the program have 10 visits with an occupational therapist and registered nurse. The participant works with the team to identify goals that increase their independent daily living activities. For example, “Showering with a decreased fear of falling.”
The program is available along the Front Range and was brought to Fort Collins this past fall. Habitat partners with CAPABLE as the handyperson. The handyperson supports the participant by completing any home modifications or repairs that support their goals. Each modification is unique to meet the needs of the individual.
Some examples of work done over the last year include:
- Installing grab bars
- Lighting improvements
- Showering aids
- Organizational improvements and support
CAPABLE manages all referrals and eligibility for participation in the program. Learn more at their website and contact them via CAPABLE@vnacolorado.org or 303-698-6302.
